What I tell people who say Shanty Town is ‘all nonsense, no lesson’ – Ini Edo

Ini Edo, a Nollywood actress and co-producer of the Nigerian Netflix series Shanty Town, has revealed what she tells individuals who believe the film is rubbish and teaches no lessons.

While Shanty Town is still the buzz of the town, one criticism that has followed the show since its debut is the extremely filthy nude scenes, as well as some assertions that the film fails to teach a lesson.

During the program's premiere, producers Chichi Nworah and Ini Edo discussed why they chose this script and the message the show provides.

In response to the question of what inspired the show, Ini Edo stated:

"What prompted it was first of all the drive to tell Nollywood stories, our own stories, in the way I thought it should be done. That was one of my sources of motivation."

Chichi Nworah commented:

"When I got the concept for Shanty Town, it was for us to talk about the awful things happening in society. The bad events that are taking place in society. The stuff that no one is talking about. The bad things that happen in the slums: organ harvesting, human trafficking, and anything else that people aren't paying attention to.

That is the idea. We wanted to spotlight this underbelly so that people might understand what we are going through as a society, and we want it to stop. We want women to be able to live their lives freely."

In response to those who claim the program is "all gibberish, no lesson," Ini Edo explained why they chose that particular script:

"Why is this script being used? The reason for this script is because we realized there was a need to share this story.

It was something going on in society that no one was talking about. Concerning women, the slave trade, and the kind of businesses that take place behind the scenes. Prostitution is extremely common all around the world. However, people in positions of authority profit from this sector. One of the issues that needed to be addressed.

The fact that it had a lot to do with women and children. And how much more they should be safeguarded, as well as what they are actually experiencing. And the reality that there is a part of the globe that some of us never get to see. However, it is taking place. So I needed folks up there who are probably uninformed that things like this are happening in our culture to understand that we need to address it."
