Blackface, a Nigerian musician from the now-defunct Plantashun Boiz, has criticized Asake, a younger member of the group, for allegedly stealing. Blackface charged Asake with not getting his approval before remixing his song in a series of tweets. He took note of the artist's attempts to outsmart him, but he is far more intelligent than Asake believes. He was persuaded by Blackface to act morally or face his wrath.
“You spend $165k dollars to shoot musical video for your artist. Una no fit use 100 naira call the owner of the song before una remix am.
Una dey form say una smart I believe. E better make una do the right thing because this one I no go sorry for una! I dey come”.
Blackface responded to his Twitter followers by providing further details regarding the song theft. He pointed out that while many aspiring musicians enjoy music, that doesn't give them the right to sample, remake, or remix works he has already released without his consent. Blackface said, "Yet many prefer to believe them, even if they are the ones that sabotage him."“The love music I know. But that doesn’t give them the right to sample, remake or remix works I have already released without proper permission? I guess they are the real ones sabotaging me while they steal my works N some of una self no know what’s original and what’s fake”.
He added,
“My people are never like just some uncreative stage occupies stealing others intellectual properties without fear of copyright laws.
“Them never use them as example yet very soon copycats go find out say they can run but they can’t hide”.
Blackface has accused a number of artists of intellectual theft throughout the years. He argued with 2face, a former bandmate, about a piece of intellectual property. On social media, the musicians got into a heated spat over who wrote the popular song African Queen. The song, which came out in 2004, helped 2face gain recognition abroad and became the first Afircan to win an MTV Europe Music Award. Blackface, a former bandmate of his, has asserted authorship of the song. Blackface also claimed ownership of the 2face song Let Somebody Love You. Due to the song, the singer had taken former 2face to court. He disclosed that the reason he held off on filing a lawsuit until now was so that he could give 2face the chance to act morally.
In response, 2face pursued him in court and demanded N50 million in damages. Blackface had apologized to 2face Idibia, though. This came about when 2face dropped his N50 million defamation lawsuit against Blackface and the two parties reached an amicable settlement. Additionally, Wizkid and Banky W were sued by Blackface for stealing his intellectual property. The musician announced the news on Instagram and explained that he hadn't spoken out about it since 2011 because he believed attorneys shouldn't always be engaged in the music industry. He believed that since individuals could sue him for music theft, why not do the same for song thieves?
