Why Jonathan Was Not Invited to Be Questioned – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has disclosed the reasons why former President Goodluck Jonathan was not invited to answer questions. When Shehu Shuaibu, the Commission's investigating officer, appeared in front of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday to discuss the N4.6 billion that was allegedly transferred into a Joint Trust account, he provided the explanation. He told the court that the money was used to pay for former President Goodluck Jonathan's campaign for president in 2015.This was stated by Shuaibu in his testimony before Justice Daniel Osiagor in the trial of Senator Nenadi Usman, the former Minister of Finance;Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, and two others over alleged money laundering and other fraud-related offenses.

Usman claimed that his team from the Special Task Force of the EFCC did not invite former President Jonathan throughout their investigation during cross-examination by Usman's attorney, Mr. Ferdinand Orbih (SAN).The witness acknowledged that Usman, the first defendant, served as the organization's Director of Finance, while Fani-Kayode, the second defendant, served as the organization's Director of Media and Publicity. When asked why he did not invite Jonathan to confirm or deny whether the money paid into the Joint Trust account was used for his campaign, he responded, "No, we did not invite him, since the President was not the one that expended the money."

He responded, "To the best of my knowledge, I do not know whether those that transferred money into the joint trust account were charged in court or not," when asked if those who transferred money into the joint trust account were arrested and prosecuted.Since I am not a lawyer, I am unable to comprehend why the court has not brought charges against them. The witness also stated that the funds were transferred from the State House to the NEA Account prior to being deposited into the joint trust account.

He mentioned that the money came from Nebolisa Emodi, the Permanent Secretary of the State House, and that his team invited him to be questioned but did not bring him to court. The case has been adjourned until today (Friday) so that the trial can continue.
