After Matchday Four, AFC Bournemouth of the English Premier League fired head coach Scott Parker. On Tuesday morning, the club announced on its official website that Parker will be temporarily replaced by former Bournemouth midfielder Gary O'Neil. After losing his final three games of the season, according to social media accounts, Parker is the first manager fired in the 2022–2023 season. "AFC Bournemouth can announce that the club has parted ways with head coach Scott Parker," the statement that references club owner Maxim Demin says. "Maxim Demin added, "I would want to officially express my appreciation to Scott and his crew for their work while they were here. The final campaign of his career will always be regarded as one of our most successful campaigns in history thanks to our promotion back to the Premier League. However, maintaining our success as a group and as a club depends on our being on the same page regarding how to manage the club sustainably. We also need to respect and believe in one another. We won't deviate from the strategy that has helped this team achieve such great success in previous years. We'll start looking for a new head coach right away.
The statement concluded, "Gary O'Neil will take interim leadership of the team, and will be assisted by Shaun Cooper and Tommy Elphick. Parker was fired after Bournemouth's 9-nil thrashing of Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday. Prior to that, Bournemouth had only defeated Aston Villa in the season's opening game and defeated Norwich on penalties in the Carabao Cup's second round. The Cherries were promoted to the Premier League after finishing behind his former team in the Championship under the guidance of the former Fulham captain and coach.
