The Nigeria National Petroleum Company's Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, reported on Tuesday that 122 people have been detained for oil theft between April and August 2022. Additionally, he disclosed that a 200 km long pipeline segment had at least 295 illicit connections that had been found by federal agents. According to him, this has hindered the company's ability to produce on a number of fronts. Kyari made this announcement at the 49th State House Briefing, which was held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and hosted by the Presidential Communications Team. The Group CEO further mentioned that in the oil-producing areas of the Niger Delta, security personnel found 344 illicit oil reservoirs, 355 cooking pots, 759 metal tanks, 37 lorries, 450 boats, and 179 holding containers used by vandals to carry out their criminal activities. However, Kyari maintained that the NNPC is not required to release the identities of people who have been detained. Kyari bemoaned that at least 700 barrels of oil are stolen from the nation every day, but he said that the degradation of the Niger Delta's ecosystem is the worst effect.
He mentioned that Vandals' confiscated property was burnt to prevent them from starting up again. The country will be PMS adequate by the middle of 2023, the Group CEO said in response to inquiries about the high cost of petroleum importation. When it starts operating next year, the Dangote Oil Refinery, he claimed, will produce at least 50 million barrels per day, negating the need to import Premium Motor Spirit. According to Kyari, NNPC shares would be IPO-ready by the middle of 2023.
