Sunday Dare, the minister of youth and sports development, congratulated Oluwatobilola Amusan for setting a new world record and winning the gold medal in the women's 100-meter hurdles event at the world athletics championships in Eugene, Oregon, the United States of America. Amusan ran an astounding 12.12 seconds in the semifinals to break the 100-meter hurdles world record. In the final, she ran a (+2.5) wind-assisted 12.06 seconds. The final time was much over the legal +2.0 wind assist allowed in Athletics, therefore it would not be recognized. She had just broken the African Record with a 12.40-second run in the heat before that.
Amusan has became the first ever world champion in athletics for Nigeria thanks to her performance in the early hours of Monday. In response to the victory, Dare commended Ese Brume, who also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 7.02m, in addition to congratulating the new world champion. I am extremely proud of what Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, and even others who didn't place on the stage in Eugene, Oregon, have accomplished, the speaker declared. For Nigerian athletics, this is just the start of big things. It's a brand-new day.
Years of diligent work and persistent knocking on doors have paid off in the correct ways. We now have a World Champion for the first time ever in our history. It's a big deal. I congratulate Nigeria. Despite the fact that they did not result in podium finishes, the Minister also highlighted a few other noteworthy achievements for Team Nigeria. "For me, these medals are not the sole benefits of the World Championships," Dare remarked. The men's and women's 4 100m relay teams showed a lot of promise for the future. "The men also gave it their best try and demonstrated they have a bright future; the ladies just made it here as the 16th best team in the world, but they were so close to getting on the podium.
"Our guys shown character in the short sprints as well. Some of them are making their debuts on a high-level stage like this, squaring off against seasoned and tournament-tested veterans and legends while staying competitive in incredibly challenging circumstances. "They should puff up their chests and take pride in their accomplishments. Now it is our duty to support them in the future by providing the ideal conditions for their development.
