Out of the 43 participating nations, Team Nigeria finished their competition at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, US, in 18th place.
Nigeria closed on a high note thanks to track standout Tobi Amusan's record-breaking victory in the 100-meter hurdles and Ese Brume's outstanding performance in the women's long jump.
Amusan broke the 100-meter hurdles world record in the semi-finals with an astounding 12.12 seconds, and he followed that up with a (+2.5) wind-assisted 12.06 seconds to earn Nigeria's first gold medal at the championships. This was despite team Nigeria's dismal performance at the competition.
As a result of her accomplishment, the 25-year-old became the first Nigerian woman to simultaneously set a world record and win a major championship.
Ese Brume's outstanding performance in the long jump let Team Nigeria enjoy yet another podium result. After opponent Malika Mihambo of Germany cleared a record 7.12 meters to win the gold medal, the Commonwealth and African long jump champion leaped over 7.02 meters to claim the silver.
Nigeria finished the championships as the fourth-best African team, after Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda, thanks to the team's triumph on Sunday. With a combined 10 medals, Ethiopia and Kenya each took home first place in the global championships. With four gold medals, Ethiopia took the lead in second place and finished in first place overall, while Kenya came in fourth. With three medals, Uganda took 14th place overall.
More medals than any other nation has ever won at a world championship were won by the US, which finished the competition with 33 overall. See more: https://youtu.be/DHl4j_25KAk
