Man bites Lagos police officer's finger, receives N400,000 bail

Tijani Muiz, 26, was granted bail on Thursday by an Ejigbo Magistrate Court in Lagos State after being charged with allegedly biting a police officer's finger. Muiz was charged with three offenses that included assault, behavior that would disturb the peace, and unlawful obstruction. These charges were brought against him by the police. He did, however, enter a not guilty plea to the accusations. Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, the prosecution, had previously informed the court that the defendant had committed the crimes on July 24 at approximately 9.30 p.m. at Jakande Gate in Ejigbo, Lagos State.

Aigbokhan claimed that the defendant prevented Inspector Raymond Maugbe, a police officer, from doing his official duties. He said, "While preventing the police from performing his official duty, the defendant bit the officer on his left finger, assaulting the officer." According to the prosecutor, the defendant behaved in a way that could have led to a breakdown of the peace of the community.

He claimed that the offenses violated sections 168(d), 173, and 174(b) of the Lagos State Criminal Law from 2015. The defendant was granted bail in the amount of N400,000 with two sureties in the same amount by Magistrate Mrs. A. K. Dosunmu. She stipulated that the sureties must be employed for a living and provide documentation of their tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
The case was continued for mention until August 23.
