Real Madrid beat Espanyol 4-0 to win their 35th La Liga title. Benzema and Rodrygo scored the goals.

Real Madrid won their 35th La Liga title in front of their home fans at the Santiago Bernabeu following a 4-0 victory over Espanyol sealed the trophy for the famous Spanish club. Madrid started several reserve players despite only needing a point from the match, and still won convincingly.

Los Blancos are now 17 points clear of Sevilla, who have four games left to play (12 points), and 18 points ahead of Barcelona, who have five games to play (15 points).

Rodrygo, a Brazilian winger, was the star of the show, scoring two goals in the first half to give Madrid a comfortable lead. From his left, he converged in the centre.

From his left flank position, he converged centrally on both goals. He teamed with fellow countryman Marcelo on the first and took advantage of a ball won by Mariano Diaz on the second. Rodrygo's calm performance on both chances belied his age of 21.

The second half became a celebration since the result was no longer in doubt, with Dani Ceballos putting on a show of abilities and Madrid scoring two more goals. Both of the second-half goals were scored in transition: Marco Asensio skillfully finished the third goal, and two of the club's top talents combined on the final goal. In the second half, Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema came on as subs, with the Brazilian feeding the Frenchman for his league-leading 26th goal assist.

Real Madrid rested key starters in preparation for the UEFA Champions League semifinal second leg against Manchester City on Wednesday. Casemiro, a central midfielder, even played at centre back due to previous ailments and suspensions.

On May 8, the timing of Real Madrid's title victory will create an unusual circumstance. That's when Real Madrid, the recently crowned champions, visits archrival Atletico Madrid. In Spanish football, it is customary for opponents to present freshly crowned winners with a guard of honour. It'll be interesting to watch if Diego Simeone and the Colchoneros comply.
